Affirming Care for LGBTQ+ Adults

You deserve support that respects who you are. Whether you are exploring your identity, navigating relationships, or seeking help with anxiety, depression, or other concerns, your experiences and goals belong at the center of therapy.

I’m John W. Wilson, PsyD, an openly gay, Atlanta-based licensed clinical psychologist providing LGBTQ-affirming virtual psychotherapy for adults. I recognize that shared identity can matter when choosing a therapist, while respecting that each person’s experiences, values, and goals are their own.

Support for What Matters to You

Being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or another sexual or gender minority is not a mental illness. At the same time, rejection, discrimination, and pressure to hide parts of yourself can create distress.

You may be seeking support with:

  • Exploring sexual orientation, gender identity, or self-expression

  • Decisions about coming out, privacy, or disclosure

  • Family expectations, rejection, or setting boundaries

  • Dating, relationships, loneliness, or belonging

  • Conflicts involving faith, religious experiences, and identity

  • Anxiety, depression, grief, or major life changes

Your reasons for seeking therapy do not have to revolve around being LGBTQ+. You are welcome to bring the concerns that matter to you.

How Affirming Therapy Can Help

An affirming approach respects sexual and gender diversity while considering the whole person: your relationships, culture, beliefs, strengths, and circumstances.

Therapy can provide room to explore your experiences, clarify your priorities, and consider choices that fit your values. Conversations may include relationships and boundaries, the effects of discrimination, or concerns unrelated to identity.

You do not need to arrive with a particular label or a settled understanding of yourself. Exploration can remain open, without pressure toward a predetermined identity or outcome.

Decisions about whether, when, and with whom to share personal information should take your preferences, safety, and circumstances into account.
