OCD Therapy for Adults
When unwanted thoughts and repeated rituals take over your life, finding support can be an important next step.
I’m John W. Wilson, PsyD, an Atlanta-based licensed clinical psychologist providing virtual (phone or video) psychotherapy for adults, including those living with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Understanding OCD
OCD can involve unwanted thoughts, images, or urges called obsessions, along with repetitive behaviors or mental rituals called compulsions. These experiences can become distressing, time-consuming, and disruptive to daily life.
Examples may include:
-
Fears about contamination or causing harm
-
Repeated checking, washing, counting, or arranging
-
Unwanted thoughts involving religion, sex, or violence
-
Silently repeating words or prayers to reduce distress
-
Avoiding situations that trigger obsessive fears
Having an unwanted thought or a repeated habit does not, by itself, mean you have OCD. An assessment can help clarify what you are experiencing and which treatment options fit your needs.
How OCD Treatment Can Help
Treatment can help people manage OCD symptoms and participate more fully in everyday life. Options include psychotherapy, medication, or a combination, depending on individual needs and preferences.
Exposure and response prevention (ERP), a form of cognitive behavioral therapy, is an established treatment for OCD. It involves approaching situations or thoughts that trigger obsessions while practicing responding without the usual compulsive rituals.
ERP is planned collaboratively with a therapist. It can bring up discomfort, so understanding the approach and developing an appropriate plan are important parts of treatment.
