Trauma Therapy for Adults
Difficult experiences can continue to affect how you feel, relate to others, and move through everyday life. Seeking support can be a step toward understanding those effects and finding a way forward.
I’m John W. Wilson, PsyD, an Atlanta-based licensed clinical psychologist providing virtual psychotherapy for adults, including those affected by trauma.

Understanding Trauma
People respond differently to traumatic experiences. Some recover over time, while others experience ongoing distress that affects their relationships, work, or daily routines.
Experiences may include:
-
Unwanted memories, nightmares, or flashbacks
-
Feeling constantly alert, tense, or easily startled
-
Avoiding reminders of what happened
-
Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
-
Persistent guilt, shame, anger, or self-blame
-
Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
Not everyone who experiences trauma develops post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). An assessment can help clarify your concerns and identify appropriate support. You do not need an existing PTSD diagnosis to ask for help.
How Trauma Treatment Can Help
Therapy can help people understand trauma-related reactions, manage symptoms, and address the ways past experiences affect life in the present.
For PTSD and Complex PTSD, treatments with strong research support include cognitive processing therapy (CPT), prolonged exposure (PE), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). These approaches work with trauma-related memories, beliefs, or avoidance in different ways.
Choosing treatment involves considering your needs, preferences, current circumstances, and the benefits and challenges of each approach. Contact me to discuss my approach to trauma therapy and whether my practice is an appropriate fit.
If harm or abuse is ongoing, addressing your current safety and support needs is also an important part of care.
Tele-Therapy for Trauma
I provide virtual psychotherapy for adults by phone or video. Video appointments take place through Zoom for Healthcare, using encrypted communication and privacy safeguards in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
Contact me to discuss your concerns and check whether services are available where you are located.
You can also review the Fees & Payments page before requesting an appointment.
Taking the Next Step
Reaching out does not require having everything figured out. An initial conversation is an opportunity to ask questions, describe what you are looking for, and explore whether working together makes sense.
You can begin by sharing your current concerns without providing a detailed account of what happened.
